Police Refused to Properly Enforce Animal Welfare Laws. Now, Civilians Are Suing.

The whole point of animal cruelty laws is to actually protect animals. And in order for that to happen, authorities are supposed to enforce these laws. But in Rochester, New York, police have apparently been ignoring or minimizing animal abuse and neglect cases.

That's why concerned civilians are working with a local organization to sue the Rochester Police Department for failure to adequately intervene in cases of animal neglect and abuse.

The lawsuit arises out of a situation in which someone had left several dogs outside in freezing winter weather. This was at a home where neighbors had already been noticing other signs of abuse and neglect, which continued for multiple years.

But each time the neighbors called authorities, no one came to investigate. No one came to educate the dog owners. No one came to rescue the dogs or take them to a veterinarian.

Police have a legal duty to uphold the law, and that includes laws to protect animals from harm and abuse. By ignoring these calls about pets' distress, police were breaking the law.

That's why Against All Oddz Animal Alliance in New York agreed to help neighbors file a lawsuit against the Rochester Police Department for failing in their legal duties. They are not seeking any money, but simple change from the police department.
