Private New Zealand Zoo Kills Two Elderly Lions, Rather than Relocate Them to Reputable Facility

A privately-owned zoo in New Zealand, operating under the name "Kamo Wildlife Sanctuary," recently shut down. And when it did so, its leaders decided to kill off two of its oldest lions, saying it would be too complicated to relocate them.

Even though the zoo is no longer operating, it still has 5 more lions locked in captivity. No one knows what will happen to them yet. The property is currently in limbo, as the facility may possibly be sold off.

It isn't the lions' fault that the zoo closed - and it isn't their fault that they were turned into captive creatures, locked up in small spaces so humans could be amused by their presence. Especially if they're born into captivity, these animals do not have the skills or instincts to survive back out in the wild where they belong. That means they're left at the mercy of humans to keep them alive if a facility goes out of business.

Closing or moving a zoo shouldn't be justification for taking the lives of animals. This zoo and its entire leadership chain must be held accountable for the unthinkable killing off of two elderly lions, simply because it refused to spend resources safely relocating them.

New Zealand officials must investigate and hold this zoo's leaders responsible for this heinous and callous decision. Sign the petition!
