Stop the Nassau County DSS lock out policy -- Help those experiencing homelessness!

There is a harsh “lock-out” policy of the Nassau County Department of Social Services in which all occupants of shelters for the homeless have to leave the premises — no matter age, physical condition or weather conditions — by 9 a.m., and they are not permitted to return until 6 p.m.

This creates an inhumane situation for the shelter residents. Those who are not working have to keep warm and dry in the libraries and other public spaces. As taxpayers, we are impacted by the negative impact of this lock-out policy, as taxes will have to go to address the physical illnesses, mental health distress, and children’s lowered school performance that are often the results.
