As the incoming Republican majority prepares to shut down the January 6th committee, Attorney General Merrick Garland has passed control of the Trump probes to an independent special counsel, veteran war criminal prosecutor Jack Smith.
"Throughout his career, Jack Smith has built a reputation as an impartial and determined prosecutor, who leads teams with energy and focus to follow the facts wherever they lead," said Garland during his press conference.
Charge Trump for his role in January 6th and for stealing classified documents!
It is imperative for the future of our democracy that Special Counsel Smith brings that determination to bear upon the disgraced ex-president. The lack of tangible consequences for Donald Trump's appalling misdeeds is a blight upon our justice system, especially as Trump prepares once again to run for President — and prepares an inevitable second coup attempt should he lose.
We must send a message to the world and to the American people: insurrection, sedition, and flagrant violations of the law will NOT be tolerated, even by ex-presidents.
