Put American Indian Children's Welfare Over Derogatory Indian Mascots

The Senate is in a unique position to send a strong legal message with HB 1165: American Indian mascots are damaging, and they will not be tolerated in spaces designated for learning.

Under the bill, without the tribe's approval, schools would have to phase out the mascots featuring American Indians within two years or face a hefty fine of $25,000 a month.

The bill was heavily resisted by Republicans, and the bill's supporters fear that it will be shot down by the Senate, with an overwhelming Republican majority, next week.

Schools are supposed to be places of learning. The American Psychological Association recommends that derogatory mascots be retired because they negatively impact native children's self-esteem. Sign and share this petition urging the Senate to put American Indian children's welfare over harmful mascots.
