Hold a referendum to decide if the post of elected Mayor should be scrapped in Leicester

Many of us are starting to realise that the Mayor has been given to much concentrated power. Peter Soulsby who is the current Mayor does not answer to anyone and can choose, as he does regularly, to ignore the opinions of councillors and members of the public. The previous system of electing a council leader was a more accountable system. Many large cities have rejected having a Mayor for this reason, yet because Leicester rushed to beat the deadline to avoid having to hold a referendum on electing a Mayor we are now stuck with a system which is open to an abuse of power. This is why most councillors quietly would agree that it was a mistake to move to a directly elected Mayor to lead the City.
