Advocating for the ordinance of keeping urban hens in the City of West Allis

            • Urban chicken farming is safe, organic, cruelty free, and it doesn't get more local than your own backyard.

          • Teach your children the respect for animals and the importance of going green.

Dear common counsel members and mayor of the City of West Allis. Were proposing the passing of an ordinance of keeping domesticated chickens in backyards for the dual purpose of pets and egg laying for human consumption.

, the keeping of chickens in the city supports a local, sustainable food system

by providing an affordable, nutritious source of protein through fresh eggs. The keeping

of chickens also provide free, quality, nitrogen-rich fertilizer; chemical-free pest control;

animal companionship and pleasure; weed control; and less noise, mess and expense

than dogs and cats.

Organic chicken farms have fewer drug-resistant bacteria.

The chicken manure can be used for composting in gardening.

Millwaukee has pasted their ordiance in 2011.
