Stop the Donkey Slaughter

It’s cruelty on an almost unimaginable scale — animals crowded together in appalling conditions, neglected and mistreated before before they are slaughtered for their skins and other body parts.

It’s a massacre fueled by the international demand for donkey parts, which are used extensively in traditional Chinese medicine. The UK-based advocacy group the Donkey Sanctuary estimates the global demand for donkeys at 10 million animals each year. But with donkey populations dwindling in China, legal and illicit markets have increasingly turned to African countries to satisfy the demand for donkey skins and other parts.

An astounding 100,000 donkeys were slaughtered in Kenya alone over the last year.

You can help stop the donkey slaughter. Botswana, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Ethiopia, and Tanzania have all banned the slaughter and export of donkeys. If these countries can take a stand against animal cruelty, certainly Kenya and South Africa — which both rely heavily on income from animal-loving international tourists — can too.

Take a stand for compassion. Sign our petition urging the prime minister of Kenya and president of South Africa to ban the export of donkey parts now.
