Do want you want to live in a City you Can Believe In? A city where we can walk to nice reasonably priced restaurants, enjoy a bite to eat, get a cup of coffee while enjoying free Wi-Fi, and purchase high quality fresh foods...that sounds like a neighborhood we all can believe in and would want to live in.
This is the direction ALL of Newark should be heading towards, not just the downtown district. All Newark residents DESERVE to have healthy food options and stores that we can safely walk to. We should be able to spend our money in the city where we live.
The City of Newark is filled with fast foods restaurants and junk retail stores that are geared towards impoverished communities. It is time for the residents, students, and employees of Newark, to put our talents and resources to work and guide the transformation of this city we call home. It is time for the citizens to demand social corporate responsibility from the companies that do business here.
It is time that we become accountable for what goes on and goes up in the City of Newark starting with the Springfield Avenue Marketplace.

It is time for the residents, students, and employees of Newark, to put our talents and resources to work and guide the transformation of this city we call home. It is time for the citizens to demand social corporate responsibility from the companies that do business here.
What is corporate social responsibility?
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) aims to ensure that companies conduct their business in a way that is ethical. This means taking account of their social, economic, and environmental impact, and consideration on human rights and social justice.
Developers in our neighborhoods should display their corporate social responsibility by meeting the community’s request for the following:
- Healthy Food Options. Commit to securing healthy food options - NO FAST FOOD
- Ensure Quality of Life. Limit the hours of construction to 7am-8pm. Limit the hours of operation of potential retail and restaurant tenants to 6am-11pm.
- Redesign of Site Plan. Set-up working meetings with all developers for the project and our community association and planners to redesign the marketplace to create a cohesive plan that is open, inviting, and pedestrian friendly.
- Responsible, Safe, Sustainable Development. The overall development should adhere to an urban commercial model that:
- Increases Walkability with use of sidewalks and paths
- Encourages Pedestrian vs Vehicular Traffic
- Utilizes the best practices for parking spaces
- Provides opportunities for the residents to have an increased number of healthy food options.
5. Ensure viability and success of the project. Conduct proper studies to ensure the development does not create a glut of housing, fast food restaurants, or other retail stores that are currently in excess in our community.
We ask that the City of Newark, the Planning Board, and Zoning Board deny any variance request submitted for the Springfield Marketplace and surrounding lots AND halt construction until the developers sign a Community Benefit Agreement prepared by Responsible Newark.
