Make Rusch Park SAFE for Our Kids!

Rusch Community Park (located off Auburn Blvd in Citrus Heights, CA) is supposed to be a beautiful and safe location for members of the community to gather, for children to play, for families to have picnics...

53 acres large, 3 large child play areas, 55 picnic tables, countless sports facilities, community pool, gymnasium, conference center, pre-school, and an amazing landscape; Rusch Community Park is SUPPOSED to be beautiful and safe.

As a parent of a 4year old girl who attends the Rusch Park preschool, I have a unique chance to explore and enjoy Rusch park during the week. I typically spend a few hours at the park at least 3 days a week. I would NEVER take my daughter into the park to play and explore during the day, considering all that I see taking place there. I am not alone...the parents of all the children at Rusch Park preschool could not agree more...the park is unsafe and nobody seems to care about cleaning it up!

Why isn't it safe, you ask? For starters, at any given time, there are vehicles that speed through the back lot right next to where our children play, where we walk through to access the bathroom, and they aren't just driving fast...they're reckless. Speaking of the bathroom...would you want your children using a restroom facility that is FILTHY, beer cans and paraphernalia littered about, no soap, no towels/functioning dryer? So maybe thats not a big deal to you. How about the fact that there's regular prostitution being conducted in the bathroom and regular drug exchanges as well? There's aggressive animals on the loose...no leashes, no concern from the owners. Then there's the presence of disrespectful individuals that essentially take up every sitting space in the park. They drink, smoke, conduct regular drug exhanges, litter, and generally speaking...have no respect for the park or the children/parents who wish to enjoy the park. If a school cannot have alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, or crime in general within its boundaries; how come all of this is allowed to go on within spitting distance of our children's preschool? The only individuals that seem to have respect for the park that have been coincidentally told to leave the park...are homeless folks!!

The teachers at Rusch Park preschool are amazing individuals and they have to observe this foul activity on a daily basis. It concerns me that 20 four-year-old children under the care of 2 adults/teachers go to play out in the park, with the aforementioned activity LITERALLY in plain sight!! Is that the fault of the teachers? No. The children must play, they need to play, and they deserve a safe place to do it in. Rusch Park is massive, but the criminal hold on the park is far bigger. Today was the last straw as I was made aware that a gang has been gathering at the park.

HOW CAN THIS BE RESOLVED? Well, for starters, when myself and my fellow parents ask the Sunrise Parks and Rec staff to contact the authorities or go to their supervisors, we are told that if they call the police, nothing will happen. "You must call the police, because they wont do anything if the Park staff calls to report."-their words exactly. Im sorry, but since when was a crime any less of a crime if its being reported by different, trustworthy, individuals? Parents HAVE called the authorities, with less than desirable results. Parents HAVE made the problems aware to the park staff, with despicable results. The point is...if Citrus Heights (Sunrise Parks/Rec, Police, Board of Sup, etc) want to get into a debate over who should call the cops or who should take certain responsibility in the matter...they are overlooking the OBVIOUS!! Rusch Park needs CLEANING UP!!

We, the parents of Rusch Park preschoolers and we, the taxpayers of Citrus Heights and surrounding towns/cities, demand that ACTION be taken now! The Sunrise Parks and Rec staff must hold accountability in reporting every single illegal act that they witness and/or know of at the park, no questions asked. The Citrus Heights Police Force must respond and react immediately, zero excuses. The Citrus Heights Board of Supervisors MUST schedule an emergency council session to put into IMMEDIATE EFFECT, a scheduled police presence and park sweep for Rusch Community Park.

Considering all the taxpayer dollars being spent to beautify Auburn Blvd, directly bordering Rusch Park, any sensible human being would think that the city would put as much care into keeping the beauty WITHIN Rusch Park.

LET IT BE KNOWN...TO THE CITY OF CITRUS HEIGHTS, TO THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, TO THE SUNRISE PARKS AND REC DISTRICT, AND TO THE CITRUS HEIGHTS POLICE FORCE: We will not stand by and allow this park to be the gathering place for crime, for drug abuse, for truancy, and we will not walk our children through a park where lack of safety is our #1 concern. Unless the city and noted departments take ACTION immediately and clean up the park, WE THE PARENTS and TAXPAYERS, will take action on our own. Considering the consequences at stake, I believe its in the best interest of the City of Citrus Heights to take IMMEDIATE action. You've ignored Rusch Park like the plague and now, you must fight this disease.
