Tell Canada to Ban Sexist Book Promoting Domestic Abuse

Both Judaism and Islam contain passages in their holy books giving husbands dominion over their wives and condoning abuse. Fortunately most countries have laws that trump these outdated, barbaric practices that many modern Jews, Christians and Muslims denounce.

That's why a new book, selling well in Canada and advising Muslim husbands to control their wives with physical and verbal intimidation, is an object of outrage for women's rights advocates, including many Muslims.

According to several sources, Ali Thanvi's A Gift For the Muslim Couple condones wife abuse, as long as the beating isn't "excessive." It further supports demeaning and controlling wives, calling some "slow and stupid" and demanding that they must be "tidy," "fulfill their husband's desires," and never leave home without permission.

Washington Post's Peter Bella says selling such a book in the U.S. would set off fireworks. It should do no less in Canada.
Tell Canada to stop selling this violent, sexist book!
We, the undersigned, believe the sale of Hazrat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi's A Gift For the Muslim Couple should be banned immediately.

Though we neither  take censorship lightly nor approve of it in most cases, this book is encouraging domestic violence that is clearly against the law in Canada, according to Canada's Department of Justice.

Clearly, any book or publication that condones or promotes such violence and violation of domestic violence laws fails to fall under any protection afforded by those guarding freedom of speech and expression.

We request that you take action immediately to ensure that sales of this book decease immediately and that the book is banned in Canadian bookstores and online as well.

Thank you for your attention to these serious concerns.
