We Are Demanding A Name Change To Craighead Elementary School

Mobile Register Editor Erwin Craighead — the namesake of Craighead Elementary School, which reported 100 percent African-American students last year — deemed whites “the superior race” and claimed black men slept through the day, fed vices at night and their women paid for it all. He said vagrancy made them steal, fight and beat women, that their cocaine and alcohol addictions made blacks “ruthless madmen” and stirred “black terror.”

No school in Mobile should be associated with such a heinous man. His ideas should never be awarded with an immortal legacy of Mobile, Al’s educational system. With a school that is predominantly African American/Black the name needs to be changed to something or someone who has done exploits to advance the African American or human condition. So in an effort to inspire our youth we must start with elevating a legacy of hatred into a legacy of peace and equality among the races and most importantly our children.
