Demand change of law for domestic violence (DV) victims in the UK

The justice system is not working for DV victims in the UK. Perpetrators are getting away with abusing their victims, who may suffer multiple abuses, but the law currently only looks at DV as a single abuse.

If someone causes grievous bodily harm (GBH) without intent, this carries a maximum custodial sentence of five years and/or an unlimited fine. If perpetrators commit GBH with intent they can get a maximum sentence of life (25-years). DV abusers, if convicted, get up to 5 years, but they could have committed a series of crimes, such as financial abuse, rape, attempted murder, coercion, physical/mental abuse etc. It is time that abusers get a minimum of 5 years for each crime committed, and there should not be a time limit for these abuses to be reported. DV should not come under one umbrella, but as individual crimes.

Victims need to be taken seriously by the justice system. The police and courts need to do more, so abusers get tougher sentences. As a victim, you are already doing a life sentence.
