The Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay Shootings Prove We Need an Assault Weapons Ban

Did you know the U.S. had a decade-long successful ban on assault weapons? The original ban, which expired in 2004, blocked the sale of 19 weapons that have the features of guns used by the military. The recent back-to-back mass shootings in California show us that the U.S. desperately needs a ban on assault weapons.

The original ban wasn't just political – it worked. While the ban was in effect, deaths from mass shootings in the U.S. were significantly less likely to happen. There is no logical reason not to bring it back.

After the tragedy of Monterey Park, Biden made a statement pushing for sweeping gun control. Moments later, a gunman killed seven people in Half Moon Bay. These tragedies "claimed the lives of people who loved to dance at a studio in Monterey Park and farm workers in the coastal community of Half Moon Bay."
