Support Automatic Voter Registration in Massachusetts!

"[A]bout 700,000 eligible citizens in Massachusetts [are] not registered to vote,” says Pamela Wilmot, executive director of the good government group Common Cause Massachusetts. Automatic voter registration could change that significantly, encouraging more citizens to come out to the polls.

On Thursday, April 28, 2016, Vermont became the fourth state to offer automatic voter registration. The policy will simplify voter registration by automatically registering citizens to vote when they sign up for a driver's license or state-issued ID.

President Obama has been pushing for automatic voter registration in all states, believing it would make voting easier and remove barriers to access. He says, "Democrats, Republicans, independents, seniors, folks with disabilities, the men and women of our military – it would make sure that it was easier for them to vote and have their vote counted." So far, only four states -- Vermont, California, Oregon and West Virginia -- have implemented the common-sense policy.

A new bill, H 4097, would set up automatic voter registration in Massachusetts, with a provision for allowing people to opt out of registration on their driver's license or ID application. Please sign the petition to urge legislators to encourage voting and support automatic voter registration!

I am writing to urge you to pass automatic voter registration in your state.
