UN: Help End Violence Against Civilians and Impose Arms Embargo on South Sudan

The situation in South Sudan right now is dire. Government forces are currently killing, raping and arbitrarily arresting civilians while rebel forces are abducting them. Thousands are caught in the midst of a struggle between government and rebel forces.

These human rights abuses have been well documented by Human Rights Watch and must stop. Recently, the US proposed that the UN Security Council approve an arms embargo on South Sudan to prevent further access to weapons. The US has also suggested expanding targeted sanctions to try and pressure the South Sudanese government to stop these abuses from occurring.

The crisis in South Sudan has been long and complicated and has affected countless civilians. It's time the UN did its part to help prevent further violence.

Sign today to stand against civilian human rights abuses in South Sudan. By signing today you are sending a strong message that providing further arms to South Sudan will only lead to more violence against civilians.

To the UN Security Council,

As someone who is deeply concerned with the safety and human rights of all peoples I am greatly troubled by the conflict in South Sudan. According to Human Rights Watch civilians are being killed, raped, arbitrarily arrested and abducted by government and rebel forces.

These human rights abuses should not be tolerated. The UN Security Council currently has a proposal by the US to impose an arms embargo on South Sudan as well as to expand targeted sanctions against the country.

Both these ideas will help to curb the violence. The arms embargo will slow down the access to weapons for both sides and the expanded sanctions means that South Sudan will have more international economic pressure to stop the current violence.

I strongly urge you to vote in favour of this proposal and to enact it as soon as possible.
