Demand that Italy ensures access to Asylum Seekers in Libyan Treaties

  • af: Graziano A
  • mottagare: The Italian Minister of Defense, Roberta Pinotti, and the Italian Government, Italy

On August 2nd, the Italian Parliament approved a military mission in Libya in support of the Libyan Coast Guard to fight human trafficking.

This vote came during an intense debate in Italy on the refugees’ crisis. Only a few days before, the Government gave in to populists’ demand to approve new restrictive roles for NGOs to rescuing people from the Mediterranean Sea.

It seems like the Italian Government wants to achieve electoral consensus instead of saving lives. The risk is that this mission will become a naval blockade made by the Italian navy and the Libyan Coast Guard. Asylum seekers risk being blocked in Libyan territory!

Italy has a duty to protect asylum seekers as well as to protect human lives fighting human trafficking.

Please, ask the Minister of Defense, Roberta Pinotti, and the Italian Government to establish a system of human rights control in Libya simultaneously with the mission.

Don’t you think we should keep human rights first in any treaty?
