SAVE the SIREN

Safety: The siren is one of the ways to notify our VOLUNTEER Fire Department of a fire call, it also alerts people in Laurel to the possibility of added traffic from Ambulance and Fire Equipment on some of our busiest areas of town. History: The Laurel siren has been used for over 70 years. In the early years the number of blast would tell fireman what ward the fire was in so they could respond. The Laurel siren has been used as a 9 p.m. alarm every night for multiple years. Nostalgia: Many of the residents of Laurel can tell you stories of what the siren meant in their lives. Most popular one is that the siren was a curfew for the youth of Laurel. When the siren went off it meant that you should be home or on your way. Stories have been told of children growing up thinking it was the law that children must be home by the time the siren went off. Wherever you were in town, when that siren went off you knew it was time to get home.
