Sierra Burgess Is Problematic. Netflix Must Stop Streaming This Offensive Movie!

Sierra Burgess Is a Loser would be better titled Sierra Burgess Is a Problematic Movie.

Note: I'm purposefully not saying "Spoiler Alert" because you really should not watch this movie. In fact, I think Netflix needs to take it down immediately.

In Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, Sierra (Shannon Purser) is a smart, confident high schooler who is bullied by the stereotypically mean cheerleader, Veronica (Kristine Froseth). When Sierra gets a text from a cute boy (Noah Centineo) who mistakes her for Veronica, she doesn't fess up, but instead decides to lie to him about her identity. And so the glorified catfishing saga begins.

From there, viewers are taken for a ride that includes transphobic jokes, mockery of deaf people, nonconsensual kissing, slut shaming and an ending that makes it seem like the whole charade was totally fine. But it's not totally fine and we can't allow this train wreck of a movie to go on.

Companies like Netflix cannot keep perpetuating problematic notions like these. From jokes at the expense of trans and deaf people, to the glorification of catfishing and nonconsensual kissing — this movie is not only bad, it's extremely offensive.
