No Senator Schmitt, YOU are the Dirt Bag. And You Need to Resign

Jack Smith was appointed special counsel to oversee federal investigations of Donald Trump and ultimately brought criminal charges against him involving Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election and his handling of classified documents. Trump denied wrongdoing, and the cases never went to trial before they were dismissed after he returned to office.

This week, Smith appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee and defended his investigations and the decisions his team made.

And Senator Eric Schmitt of Missouri, a guy that stupid people think would be a great VP for JD Vance, apparently thought he had the perfect gotcha.

Schmitt suggested that text messages proved Smith had secretly traveled to Atlanta and attended an Atlanta Hawks game, potentially connecting him to Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.

Apparently, if Smith had been at that Hawks game in Atlanta, it would have proven a huge conspiracy, because reasons. That one thing was the pedestal upon which this whole conspiracy sat.  And when always sharp Senator Amy Klobuchar connected the dots, and realized Smith had been at the Iowa Hawkeyes game in Maryland.  Not a Hawks game in Atlanta.

Everybody screws up. And Schmitt had a pretty easy way out: admit he'd mixed up the Hawks and the Hawkeyes, correct himself, make some  Missouri joke about crops and cattle or something, and move on.

He didn't.

Instead, Schmitt continued attacking Smith, called him a "dirtbag" and a "villain," and accused him of having already perjured himself. Afterward, Schmitt reportedly maintained that the episode was "not a mistake."

We may have gotten used to this kind of behavior in the age of Trump, but we should never normalize it.  And this jerk has no place being in the Senate.
