Canada, Save the Vancouver Playhouse
The news was not about an earthquake or a violent storm, but it was sudden, shocking and sad nonetheless. The Vancouver BC community just got word that their historic playhouse would be shut down.
After 49 years of performances, "Memories and tears flowed Saturday night as The Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company held its final curtain call," wrote the Vancouver Sun, which recorded shocked responses of actors speaking at a large crowd rallying outside.
The closing happened so suddenly "that the artistic community hasn't had a chance to sit down with the powers that be and say what they think," actress Jennifer Clement lamented. But Actor Jay Brazeau told the Sun he sees no reason to give up. He says Canada needs to adopt the European model and fight for the arts.
Don't let the Playhouse become "just another bar on the Granville strip," as another actor fears could be its fate.
Canada, get your act together and save the Vancouver Playhouse.
We, the undersigned, believe that closing the Vancouver Playhouse is a bad idea.
We agree with those protesting the planned closing that the community should be given the chance to work out a way to save the Playhouse, not just for it's contribution to the community and to the arts, but also because it is an historic building that should be preserved.
Even the head of the Playhouse's rival, Bill Millerd, admits to its importance as a major force in the fabric of Vancouver's arts scene, and historically, as the first professional theatre company of any substance in BC, "from which everything else absolutely flowed."
Certainly Canada can find the funds somewhere to save this historically and culturally significant landmark.
Please find a way to save the Vancouver Playhouse or give the community a chance to save it themselves.
Thank you for considering these requests.
