I was horrified when I heard that a bar in Spokane, Washington is planning to offer a drink called "Date Grape Koolaid." When people in the town and across the country asked the bar to pull the drink from their menu the bar staff responded by attacking rape survivors as "not smart enough" to understand the joke.
Sexual assault is nothing to joke about -- it's a traumatic experience forced upon millions of people. 1 in 3 American women will be sexually abused during their lifetime. And in college towns like Spokane, where Daiquiri Factory is located, rape and sexual assault are even more common.
"Date Grape Koolaid" is not a clever or funny name. It's offensive and it condones sexual assault.
Please sign my petition to demand that Daiquiri Factory formally apologize and take the "Date Grape Koolaid" drink off their menu.
Dear Daiquiry Factory,
We are horrified that you would make light of sexual assault. Women at bars are already prime targets for sexual predators, and naming your menu items after date rape only encourages people to think this is an acceptable thing to do. If anything, you have a responsibility to help minimize the danger of sexual assault at your place of business, not encourage it.
Please rename or remove this drink from your menu, and apologize to the community for this serious misstep.
