ASK CUOMO TO FIGHT ICE! RETURN REGGIE CASTEL TO OUR COMMUNITY

@NYGovCuomo
Governor Cuomo, we constituents and worldwide followers of New York State politics, plead with you to take practical action in keeping with yesterday's announcement that you will resist the violent and destructive behavior of ICE in our state.

Seven months ago, a valued resident of Rochester NY was seized and returned to Haiti, a country he'd not seen since his early childhood. Though he committed a crime in his youth and faced legal repercussions, upon his release from prison, Reggie Castel became an admired member of our community. He has been ambitious and accomplished, praised by his employers. He is appreciated as an active member of his religious congregation. He and his wife have raised a family of delightful and successful children. Reggie's involvement in the school system so engaged the Rochester School District superintendent, who is also an attorney, that he opened legal negotiation with your office to prevent, and now that it has happened, to reverse ICE's destructive and arbitrary seizure of Reggie.

Just on the cusp of your office seriously considering a pardon for this youthful offense, and with the explicit support of Senator Gillibrand, ICE ripped him from his family and deported him.

Your office had heard Reggie's case, understood the injustice, and was negotiating a likely pardon. They were willing to speak to ICE and had issued paperwork to delay any actions toward deportation. Senator Gillibrand had been trying to reach the Buffalo office and was waiting to speak to any official there to stall deportation. When ICE did not respond to their entreaties, community members brought the paperwork directly to the ICE officials and asked that they speak to the waiting attorneys of your office and to the Senator's staff. ICE dismissed the directives and scoffed at the notion of accepting these phone calls. Reggie was then promptly deported.

Reggie is now in Haiti, knowing no one, faced with extreme health issues (unable to get medication for advanced diabetes, except for those that his wife can take to him.) He is not safe there, has poor living conditions, is socially isolated. He does not speak the language. This calamitous deportation leaves the family with incredible expenses traveling to take medicine and needed supplies, at the very time the family's primary breadwinner is now gone. Family, friends and a large community are bereft at the absence of this fine man. This is another case of outrageous injustice, the ability of ICE to act with impunity and be accountable to no one – even your own staff. Please act on your promise to thwart ICE's terrorism against New Yorkers. We ask you to promptly pardon Reggie and facilitate his return to our waiting community.

We surpassed our initial goal and, as interest in justice for Reggie expands, have updated it with hopes of 400 supporters and more. The stronger our response to Governor Cuomo's anger with ICE's reprehensible behavior, the more likely he'll consider our plea for pardoning this man of honor. This is the first step in Reggie's return to Rochester. Please encourage your friends to sign, both by reposting and by requesting individual friends to come aboard, signing and sharing! Thanks, everyone!

We're one vote shy of half way home!
Remember that you can repost regularly and also message or email the petition to your friends. It's pressing that we reach the governor while he is still acting on his fiery denunciation of ICE's illegal and vile tactics. Thank you for all your help.

We are headed toward half of our goal of 500 signatures. Please remember all the usual ways to spread the message: FB, Twitter, and email posts. Encouraging phone calls work too! Grateful to all of you.
