Demand Covid-19 Testing in New Mexico - Send Children Back to in Person School Full Time

Due to Covid-19 New Mexico public schools are considering hybrid and remote learning options for the fall. For many parents and children this is not ideal. With statewide testing for students and teachers we could safely and effectively send our children back to a traditional school format starting this fall. We believe the states resources could be put to better use by figuring out how to send our children back to school safely and they answer is with testing. The general model would be set up rapid testing sites at each school campus for three days before the start of the fall semester. Healthy children and staff will be able to start school in the traditional format immediately. Medically fragile students may opt for a remote learning option that does not affect their charter or transfer status. Each school or district can implement further safety measures (requirements for masks and social distancing) if they deem it necessary. If a student or staff member becomes ill in the future another round of testing or pool testing can be administered regularly or at random. Infected individuals will be required to quarantine and may return when they are deemed eligible.

Why this is a better model - First and foremost, it serves the district and the state by saving money. This option would not cost the state any extra expenditures due to the infrastructure required for online learning and the complications involved to implement the hybrid model. Additionally, it keeps students and teachers together and provides a far better opportunity to recoup the learning loss from last spring, so students can move forward and stay on track, together. Furthermore, this will be a much needed moral booster for communities which have done their part to follow state mandates for health and safety regarding Covid-19. At this time, we have no clinical data regarding the virus rates of the student/teacher/staff population of NM schools. It may be either much better or much worse than we think, and knowing is half the battle. How can we go forward with any plans when we simply do not have the data needed to support any of the models which have been proposed?
