Littleport is the birthplace of ice speedskating in England. Races have been organised on the fens since the 1700's. In 1892 one Thomas Peacock bought 'The Moors' in Littleport and flooded it in winter and when it froze races were held - famously for the 'Littleport Cup' - it being called 'The Ice Ground'. Hundreds of men and women participated - thousands came to skate for fun and to watch the racing. We want to bring that rural heritage into the 21st century as a modern sustainable facility for the benefit of all who love speedskating whether recreationally or competitively and of course for afficionados of other skating disciplines...
