This New Rule Could Doom Service Animals and Their Owners

"The sky's the limit" will not be a phrase with any relevance for folks with disabilities who depend on a service animal that isn't a dog. A new proposal from the Department of Transportation would ban any service animal on flights in the United States beyond the canine variety with no exceptions.

Sign the petition and ask that the Department of Transportation throw out this harmful proposal.

The new proposal also lays out an arduous new process even for folks whose service animals are, in fact, dogs. They must fill out a series of federal forms and gain approval. If the term "federal form" makes you think quick and easy, you're kidding yourself. These individuals already have obstacles to tackle when it comes to travel - they don't need the stress and confusion of working with the already busy airline and government staff just to get on a plane with their furry family members and aids.

Not only is this proposal harmful for folks with physical or psychological disabilities, but it could prove deadly to their beloved service companions too. According to the Department of Transportation's Air Travel Consumer Reports, in 2019 at least 10 animals died in cargo holds of planes, and at least 7 more were injured.

These animals are family members and integral parts of disabled people's access to the world around them. They should not be treated like luggage, thrown into freezing or sweltering temperatures without access to food or water for hours.

Please, sign the petition today demanding that this rule from the Department of Transportation be abandoned so better answers can be sought!

The comment period for this proposal is open. After signing the petition, please go to this page and use this opportunity to oppose the rule!
