In the wake of the two very national non-indictments, the African-American community has organized within itself and has embraced all who have gathered with us. Out of these terrible tragedies has risen a good that has not been seen on this campus or in this nation in decades. This good is the unification of those who feel disenfranchised by this nation’s justice system.
As African-Americans, we have grown up hearing of the struggles and misfortunes our ancestry has faced. Unfortunately, recent events have proved that their fights are ones we are still fighting. But this February, we join together to celebrate our inherent excellence, which comes from being the descendants of the first Kings and Queens of this world.
This Black History Month, we would like to honor the Kings and Queens of past and present by painting a removable mural outside of the Nymburu Cultural Center. These empowering images would be on display throughout the entire heritage month. During this frustrating time for our community, we hope that this mural will inspire those who walk past it and sends the wider message to the UMCP campus that Black lives do matter.
