A Canton, Ohio Walmart recently set up a special area in their store with bins dedicated to collecting food so their less fortunate employees could celebrate Thanksgiving. Community members and store workers were less than happy about the proposed food drive. A Mr. Mills of Canton stated, "That Walmart would have the audacity to ask low-wage workers to donate food to other low-wage workers -- to me, it is a moral outrage."

The employees at Walmart feel it is demoralizing to hold a food drive for them rather than addressing how little they're paid to diligently work for the company.  A Ms. Ferreira involved in strikes in the area was extremely angered by the food drive and told the media, "The Company needs to stand up and give them their 40 hours and a living wage, so they don't have to worry about whether they can afford Thanksgiving."

A Walmart spokesman has spoken up for the food drive, saying, "It is for associates who have had some hardships come up and this is part of the company's culture to rally around associates and take care of them when they face extreme hardships."  If they really had any concerns, they would pay their employees better, rather than forcing them to rely on charity from strangers.  Employees have been protesting these low wages and their limited hours as part-time workers for way too long.

I have talked to many Walmart employees who are disturbed by the treatment they received in the company. Walmart execs need to treat their workers better with more comparable wages then they would not have to minister to them as though they are needy and unfortunate.  Most people take pride in providing for themselves with their earnings.  Please sign and share this petition worldwide and express to Walmart that they should pay their employees better rather than have a food drive. The workers would be happier and more productive if they could earn a better wage to provide for their families!

Walmart Officials – You need to provide better wages for your employees.  It is degrading to give them such low salaries and then have to treat them like paupers during the holidays with a food drive.  If you were to provide the higher wages they deserve, the employees would provide you more dedication and better service because of their higher self-worth.  Rather than treat them like charity cases, treat them like valued employees and provide them with higher pay!
