Adding Citizenship Questions to the 2020 Census Is Racist and Unnecessary

It's been almost 70 years since the U.S. Government asked about a person's citizenship status when conducting the census, and now the Trump White House wants to start again.

Adding this question is racist, fear-mongering, and unnecessary. Please sign and share to stop it!

The US census isn't just a poll. Census results are the basis for critical decisions that affect how billions of dollars in federal funds are distributed and the number of representatives each state gets in Congress.

In a time when immigrant families are already feeling threatened from cruel ICE raids and xenophobic travel bans, adding this question will stop many families from completing and returning the census — regardless of their citizenship status.

And experts — including former directors of the census — have spoken out saying that adding a question about citizenship would result in inaccurate results and reduced response rates.

Trump may say the goal is to track people who may be in the country without documentation or look for alleged "voter fraud" -- but it's clear that it's will be added to simply intimidate those of a different ethnicity. The goal of the Census is to accurately represent the demographics of the people living in the US — it should never be used a tool to intimidate and threaten our friends, families, and neighbors.

Protect all people's privacy and demand the Trump administration remove the citizenship question from the census forms.

A federal judge struck down this effort to add citizenship question to the 2020 census. This won’t be the last word, but it’s a huge setback for the Trump Administration. Thank you for your help in exerting pressure.
