Clinical trials are research studies that provide the vital link between breakthroughs in the lab and new treatments that extend and improve the lives of patients with cancer – patients like Lori Cuffari, who was diagnosed with a thyroid cancer that was resistant to standard treatment. Thanks to a clinical trial, today Lori is one of more than 13 million cancer survivors in the US. Since 1984 the Conquer Cancer Foundation of ASCO Grants & Awards Program has supported more than a thousand cancer research projects. That support is helping to conquer cancer every day. In fact, Lori’s doctor, Marcia Brose, MD, PhD is a Conquer Cancer Foundation grant recipient. Participation in clinical trials can both help improve survival rates for cancer patients. Without clinical trials, we wouldn’t have new cancer therapies. Yet, despite the promise offered by clinical trials, less than 5% of adults with cancer enroll in them.
