Support Mountain View Planned Parenthood Clinic!

We support the proposal by Supervisor Joe Simitian for the County to save the Mountain View Planned Parenthood clinic, at the corner of San Antonio Road and California Street. It is under threat of closure as early as May due to intense redevelopment. A nearby alternative location must be identified as soon as possible to maintain health services for North Santa Clara County. A partnership between County Health and Planned Parenthood would be an excellent start.

From Joe Simitian's press release:
SIMITIAN URGES COUNTY TO STEP UP
FOR PLANNED PARENTHOOD

SAN JOSE - Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian is urging the County to step up to address the potential closing of the Planned Parenthood health clinic in Mountain View, which could shut its doors as early as May of this year.

At Tuesday's meeting of the Board of Supervisors, Simitian will ask County Administration to consider a range of potential solutions to allow Planned Parenthood to remain in Mountain View.

"If Planned Parenthood has a problem, we have a problem," said Simitian.  The Fifth Supervisorial District (which includes cities in the North County and West Valley), is the only district without a County health clinic. That means that we rely on a network of community health clinics and non-profits to provide these essential services.

The Planned Parenthood clinic, located at the intersection of San Antonio Road and California Street in Mountain View, cares for an estimated 8,095 patients a year, more than 80% of whom are Santa Clara County residents. There are 2,131 members of the County-owned and operated Valley Health Plan assigned to primary care providers at the clinic.

While 70% of the clinic's patients earn below 138% of the Federal Poverty Level (the upper limit of Medi-Cal financial eligibility), only 24% are eligible for Medi-Cal. Without Planned Parenthood, these patients are left with few options for accessing reproductive health services and primary care where they live and work.

"Planned Parenthood Mar Monte opened its first Mountain View health center in 1973 and remains staunchly committed to providing continuing health care to the individuals and families who have relied on our services for more than four decades," said Linda Williams, CEO of Planned Parenthood Mar Monte. We are so pleased that the County recognizes the critical importance of keeping the care available to people who live and work in Mountain View and surrounding communities.

This challenge comes at the worst possible time, given the efforts to defund Planned Parenthood nationally by Congress and the new administration, Simitian said. It's going to be up to us to make sure that we protect affordable access to critical health care services here in our community.

AN OPPORTUNITY, AS WELL AS A CHALLENGE.

If the Board approves Simitian's proposal, the County will examine a range of options to protect the clinic, including the possibility of a partnership between the County and Planned Parenthood.

"This may be an opportunity, as well as a challenge," said Simitian. I'd like to consider the potential for a County health clinic to operate in Mountain View in tandem with Planned Parenthood. Side by side, each focusing on the areas of their greatest strengths, I think the potential is there for Planned Parenthood and the County to team up in a very powerful way. A long-term partnership could be a win for the County, Planned Parenthood, and the patients we serve.

The move to work collaboratively with Planned Parenthood builds upon earlier efforts to expand health services in the North County, including a partnership with the Ravenswood Clinic in East Palo Alto, urgent care access at the Sunnyvale Valley Health Clinic, and access to behavioral care and mental health services at MayView Community Health Center.

We the undersigned support the proposal by Supervisor Joe Simitian for the County to save the Mountain View Planned Parenthood clinic, at the corner of San Antonio Road and California Street. It is under threat of closure as early as May due to intense redevelopment. A nearby alternative location must be identified as soon as possible to maintain health services for North Santa Clara County. A partnership between County Health and Planned Parenthood would be an excellent start.

Planned Parenthood is an important and valued part of our community. Please help us save it!
