Support Arizonans in debt by passing SB1796 to protect household essentials from creditors

Whether insured or uninsured, rich or poor — debt affects too many Arizonans and current law does little to protect us.

Debtors can lose their homes, cars, and wages. With the COVID-19 pandemic decreasing employment and increasing the need for medical care, now is the time to protect Arizonans.

Senate Bill 1796 would improve protections by ensuring the following essentials cannot be repossessed:
  • Up to $15,000 of household goods.
  • Vehicles worth up to $25,000 for disabled drivers and up to $15,000 for all Arizonans.
  • A home of any value.

In cases of medical debt, savings up to $3,000 held in bank accounts cannot be seized by creditors and wage garnishments are limited to a smaller portion of disposable earnings.

Debt is often out of a person's control and can wreck our household finances. We should be able to look after our health without losing our livelihood.
