Hope Amidst Tragedy: 9-Year-Old Shot While Playing, Finds Recovery and Resilience in Exile

I want you to try to imagine a parent who has just received news that their child has been shot after playing outside with their friends. Now, they are in critical condition and will need urgent surgery to survive. Terrifying thought, isn't it?

Meet Abdellatif Bakhit Haroun, a resilient 9-year-old boy whose life took a tragic turn when a sniper's bullet struck him in the spine while playing near his home in El Geneina, Darfur.

Today, he lives with paralysis from the waist down. A devastating reminder of the human cost of the ongoing conflict.

Abdellatif had to flee to Chad, where he underwent surgery and is now in the process of recovery, thanks to the dedicated care and rehabilitation sessions provided by HI's team.

Sadly, his story is just one among the countless children affected by the relentless conflict in Sudan.

Since April 2023, Abdellatif's hometown has become too dangerous for any child to live in. The conflict has resulted in mass killings, and it has forced millions to flee for safety.
