I run a dog newsletter, I Love Every Dog, but this case is really about cats, and about a mail carrier's route turning into something much darker.
In Martin County, Florida, deputies say a 77-year-old U.S. Postal Service worker spent time gathering stray cats she encountered along her mail route and brought them home, where they joined a growing, hidden population of animals. When deputies finally searched her house, they found 92 animals: 80 cats and 12 dogs. The sheriff described temperatures inside exceeding 110 degrees, no working air conditioning or ventilation, and roughly a foot of animal waste built up in parts of the home. One deputy said simply that the stench was unreal and the air was stifling hot.
Given the scale of what investigators found, prosecutors could have filed as many as 160 counts. Instead, she was charged with just two: one count of animal cruelty and one count of confining animals without sufficient exercise. Bond was set at $50,000.
I understand prosecutors sometimes streamline charges for efficiency. But two counts for 92 animals, most of them cats who had no say in where they ended up, sends a message that the number of victims barely matters once a case reaches a courtroom. It also does not reflect the severity of what deputies actually found inside that home.
I am asking State Attorney Thomas Bakkedahl to revisit the charges in this case and file counts that reflect the true number of animals harmed, and to seek a sentence that includes a permanent ban on this defendant ever owning, fostering, or harboring animals again, along with mandatory restitution for the veterinary and shelter costs Martin County has now taken on for 92 animals that should never have been in that house in the first place.
