Canadians Need the Facts - Stand Strong for Independent Journalism

Could chemicals leaked by the oil and gas industry be affecting your community? Why are Inuit women ending up living on the streets and even dead in Canadian cities like Montreal? What's the government really doing about climate change and why can't you find an electric car at Canadian dealerships?

The answers to these questions aren't just interesting, they're critical for helping every Canadian understand the world and make informed choices in our democracy. Yet, the 24-hour-news cycle, shrinking budgets and deceptive politics mean more often than not we're not getting the answers we need. In most cases, no one is even asking the right questions.

For our democracy to work, we need in-depth investigative journalism produced by dogged, independent reporters whose only agenda is finding the truth. Independent news publications like National Observer dig deep to bring you the hard-hitting answers you need. From the environment and Indigenous peoples' rights to government corruption and corporate ethics, Canadians deserve news that's informative, not just entertaining.

Just look at the Energy East pipeline for example. Last year, National Observer exposed what was going on in the backrooms behind the Energy East pipeline process forcing an end to hearings and helping ensure things wouldn't be rigged in TransCanada's favour. As a result, the project was stalled. Today the Energy East pipeline is dead. When journalists overlook important stories and fail to get all the facts, we are all left uninformed about issues that impact us.

Independent media only exists because of readers like you. Please sign to show that you support the National Observer's commitment to independent news, commentary and investigative reporting.
