Urge Congress to be Civil
In the shadow of the recent shooting deaths in Arizona, it becomes obvious that our political leaders must give up their inflammatory rhetoric and return to civil discourse.
We must demand more civility from the people that represent us. We are all on the same side regardless of our political standings--our goal is to make America the best it can be. But all too often this goal is lost in the political skirmishing, and our politicians focus their energies on putting their opponents down rather than finding a way forward.
Congress needs to understand the consequences of their political conversations and that while provocative language may be temporarily useful, it damages the political system and may have tragic consequences.
Please sign the petition to ask our political leaders to speak and behave more civilly to each other.
I write to encourage you to be more mindful of your political language and behavior. While it is important to maintain a firm stance on your beliefs, it is just as important to be civil in your approach to disagreements.
Members of Congress are leaders and role models. They set the tone for debate, and provocative language may encourage those at the political edges to tragic action.

I urge you to be mindful. To be civil. You are influencing our society in more ways than the obvious, and you should not take that additional responsibility lightly.
