Tell Congress to Let People Help Animals Trapped in Hot Cars or Other Dangerous Situations

We all know the horror stories: a dog, trapped inside a car with its windows rolled up — and the temperature soaring. Or a dog, tethered to a post in a yard, as it drops below freezing. This neglect is unacceptable — and something must be done.

I recently posted a petition calling on Massachusetts legislators to pass state bill  S. 2369. That bill tackles the dangerous and frequently deadly consequences of leaving companion animals in vulnerable situations, particularly during extreme weather conditions. S. 2369 allows people who see a life-threatening situation for an animal to intervene and prevent suffering or death.

More than 80,000 supporters signed that petition and Masachusetts passed the bill. Many of you suggested there should be similar NATIONAL legislation. That's what this petition requests.

We need to be a voice for animals and tell Congress that it is time to pass legislation that allows for a person to intervene if — and when — they see a life-threatening situation for an animal. And, like S. 2369, national legislation should also ensure that dogs are not tethered of left outside for extended periods of time, particularly during extreme weather conditions.

I believe that only a NATIONAL law will fix this issue. Unfortunately, too few states have taken the steps needed to protect animals from suffering or dying in extreme circumstances.

Please take a moment to sign my petition and tell Congress to pass legislation to allow caring people to help animals in need.

Dear Congressmember,

Too often we hear heartbreaking stories of animals being left in vulnerable situations: trapped inside a car on a hot day with its windows rolled up, or tethered to a post in a yard as it drops below freezing. This neglect is unacceptable — and something must be done.

Massachusetts legislators recently passed S. 2369, a bill that outlaws leaving animals in vulnerable situations and allows people who see a life-threatening situation for an animal to intervene and prevent suffering or death.

Please be a voice for animals. It's time for national legislation to protect animals from preventable injuries and death from being left in these conditions.
