This New Year's Eve, Uber and Lyft Can Help Keep Drunk Drivers Off the Road

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 30 people in the United States die in vehicle crashes caused by drug- and/or alcohol-impaired drivers every day, claiming almost 11,000 lives per year.

Those numbers only get worse during the holidays. In 2017, the U.S. Department of Transportation and the NHTSA reported 885 drunk driving fatalities during the month of December, with more than one third of those deaths occurring between Christmas and New Year's Day.

That's why Lyft and Uber should go the extra mile by offering free rides on New Year's Eve, concentrating on areas that have the highest percentage of drunk driving fatalities.

Uber recently announced their #ReasonstoRide campaign with Mothers Against Drunk Driving to discourage holiday drinkers from getting behind the wheel. While this is a great start, doing more could mean saving more lives.

This November, Care2's petition of over 116,000 signatures encouraged Uber to offer free rides to the polls — and they did. Their offer supported the highest voter turnout for any midterm election in the last century. The numbers don't lie — free transportation makes ridesharing apps even more accessible.

While drunk driving fatalities have decreased by 7 percent over the last decade, NHTSA and USDOT saw an increase of 105 deaths in December 2017 compared to the previous year. We can and should do better.

With the technology to summon a ride at our fingertips, there is no excuse for drunk driving. But when those rides are free, there is really no excuse. Uber and Lyft have the power to take more drunk drivers off the road, ringing in a happier, safer 2019.

Human lives are priceless — Uber and Lyft should offer rides at no cost to users on New Year's Eve.
