Eight years in prison for suffering a miscarriage. Free Belén.

27-year-old Belén is serving an eight year prison sentence in Argentina following a court’s ruling that she was guilty of murder after suffering a miscarriage in a public hospital.

No woman should be in prison for having a miscarriage.

Police and hospital staff treated Belén appallingly. Not only was she insulted and forced to endure invasive medical examinations, but her privacy was violated by medical staff as they offered information to police without her consent.

Join our call to free Belén.

Call on the authorities in Argentina to release Belén immediately and to overturn the archaic law that punishes women for suffering miscarriages.
Dear Prosecutor,

I call on you to release Belén immediately and unconditionally, guaranteeing that no criminal process is conducted against her nor any other girl or woman who suffers a miscarriage or other obstetric complications.

Authorities must instruct health professionals to guarantee the doctor-patient duty of confidentiality and to guarantee mechanisms to sanction anyone who fails to protect women’s right to privacy.

Finally, I urge you to open a prompt, impartial and independent investigation into the allegations of ill-treatment and infringements on the right to privacy committed both by health professionals and police officers.
