Protect The Innocent Citizens of the Ivory Coast

Update: Former President Laurent Gbagbo was arrested Monday 4/11 after a week long siege of his residence. We will keep you updated as we learn more.

In November 2010, former president of Ivory Coast Laurent Gbagbo was defeated in an election by Alassane Ouattara, whose claim to the presidential office is supported by the United Nations, the African Union, the United States and the European Union, but has refused to step down.

As the armed forces loyal to the new president fight those loyal to the former president, innocent civilians are being caught in the crossfire. Many are forced to flee from the spreading violence, becoming refugees, and those that stay behind are vulnerable to looting and assault and are often attacked.

Until Laurent Gbagbo steps down and gives the presidency to the man that the public elected, the innocent citizens of the Ivory Coast must be protected from all armed forces.

Join us in telling former President Laurent Gbagbo and newly-elected President Alassane Ouattara that their citizen's well-being should come first and that they must protect them from the violence of conflict.
Across Cote D'Ivoire, innocent citizens are being caught in the dangerous crossfire of the two groups of armed forces that are loyal to each of you. A president's first and foremost priority should be the health and well-being of his people, and I urge both of you to make sure that no citizen is harmed by forces acting under your name.
