Italy Must Make its Surrogacy Laws LGBT Inclusive!

Chiara Foglietta and partner Micaela Ghisleni were told that in order to have their baby recognized they would have to lie on his official registration forms and pretend to have conceived the child through a heterosexual relationship rather than through artificial insemination abroad.

This is because Italian law will only recognize artificial insemination for so-called "stable" heterosexual couples, something that leaves same-gender couples and their right to family life completely disenfranchised and legally vulnerable. This has to change!

Italian President Sergio Mattarella can demand parliament make reform of surrogacy laws a priority to ensure that LGBT couples and other couples who fall outside of these narrow restrictions are given the recognition and rights they deserve.
