REFORM THE MOVIE RATINGS SYSTEM!

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has frequently failed to give clear, concise, and unambiguous information about movie content in ratings descriptions. This organization has been especially negligent about warning movie goers about depictions of sexual assaults. The National Organization for Women—NYC (NOW-NYC) has discovered more than fifty films with rape scenes without warnings in the ratings descriptions.

NOW-NYC is making the following demands:

 ·        Adopt a workable definition of “rape” or “attempted rape” and apply it to all films that are submitted to the board.
·        Automatically rate any film that depicts rape with at least an R.
·        Amend the ratings or rating descriptions for any films that are due to be released in theatres this year if they portray any type of sexualized violence.
·        Retroactively change the ratings or ratings description for any film that has been, or will be, released on home video and DVD if it depicts sexual assaults.
·        Retroactively upgrade the MPAA movie database so that all of the films that depict sexual violence have the words “rape” and “attempted rape” in their ratings descriptions.
