Autistic individuals with severe self injury and aggression are not receiving the help they need and deserve. Families are living in crisis on a daily basis. There are only a handful of in-patient units in the entire U.S. with an average of 15 beds each, making the waitlists 6 months -2 years. These individuals, often children end up in a hospital or psychiatric unit for months to a year or longer. The hospitals and psychiatric units can do NOTHING for them other than mechanically restrain and sedate. Many are FORCED to home school. This is a crisis in the U.S. Federal funding for research, resources and in-patient facilities is desperately needed.
