Following Israel's devastating 51-day assault on Gaza in 2014, many children and their families are still living amongst the ruins. 19,000 homes were destroyed during these attacks - and now Palestinian efforts to rebuild are being blocked in the name of security.
Approximately 75,000 Palestinians in Gaza remain homeless. Many hospitals, clinics and schools have not been rebuilt, and the whole of Gaza suffers from limited access to electricity and drinkable water.
The blockade of Gaza, now in its tenth year, significantly restricts the movement of basic building materials. Severe shortages in medicines and equipment for hospitals mean that more patients need referrals outside of Gaza for life-saving treatment. And travel permits are increasingly difficult to obtain. It's time to end the blockade on Gaza.
Gaza's only rehabilitation hospital, Al Wafa, was completely destroyed in 2014 and remains a pile of rubble to this day. Dr. Basman Alashi, Executive Director of the hospital, continues to fight to rebuild the hospital. "I hope that someone will hear the voices of the weak, the elderly, and people with disabilities," said Dr. Basman.
