Make Sentencing Smarter

The hallmark of a legitimate justice system is fairness. And yet, today in America, thousands upon thousands of people are serving decades-long prison sentences for non-violent crimes. Their lives are being needlessly thrown away and billions of taxpayer dollars are being wasted.

The reason? Extreme sentencing and mandatory minimum laws that tie judges' hands behind their backs, preventing them from issuing sentences that actually fit the crime. It's time to change these laws.

Democratic and Republican members of Congress have joined together to introduce the Smarter Sentencing Act, which would reduce mandatory minimum sentences for certain drug offenses and give judges leeway when sentencing people who do not pose a public safety risk.

But this session of Congress is about to end – we need to act now.

Ask Congress to roll back federal mandatory minimum sentencing laws by passing the Smarter Sentencing Act before the end of this year. Help make our criminal justice system more fair and humane.
Dear [Member of Congress],

It's time to reform mandatory minimum sentencing policies that are extreme, ineffective, and waste taxpayer dollars.

Pass the bipartisan Smarter Sentencing Act, which will give judges the ability to determine sentences that fit the crime.
