Hold the Food Industry Accountable - Make Our Food Safe

Every day, more than 200,000 Americans get sick from the food they eat: eggs, cookie dough, spinach, peppers... your plate could be next.

While a bill to make our food system safer passed the House a year ago, it has stalled in the Senate. It has bipartisan support -- but we need the Senate to act now.

Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation and co-producer of Food Inc., has joined forces with Consumers Union in the fight to bring this bill to a vote

"We've seen what happens when we let Wall Street regulate itself. When we let the oil industry regulate itself. It makes absolutely no sense to let the food industry continue to regulate itself."

If you agree with Schlosser, sign the petition urging your Senators to help bring the food safety bill S.510 to a vote. Let's make our food system better and safer today!
Subject: Pass S. 510 and make our food safer!

Dear [Decision Maker],

I agree with Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation and co-producer of the movie Food Inc., that we need to pass the food safety bill now.

This bill (S 510) has been awaiting a vote for seven months despite waves of food borne illness. Don't wait! Tell Senate leaders to bring it up for a vote, and then vote YES!

The centralization and industrialization of our food system has made it very easy for dangerous pathogens to spread far and wide, and that's why we need a modern food safety system.

The FDA Food Safety Modernization Bill, S. 510, will give the federal government the power to prevent the spread of dangerous pathogens, to trace ingredients back to their source, and most importantly of all to order the recall of contaminated food.

We've seen what happens when we let Wall Street regulate itself. When we let the oil industry regulate itself. It makes absolutely no sense to let the food industry continue to regulate itself.

I urge you to pass a strong food safety bill with no loopholes for any imported food or any food I buy in the supermarket. The bill should:

- increase inspection of food processors;
- improve reporting when labs find contamination; and
- require all imported food to meet U.S. standards.
