This petition is meant to show support for habeas corpus and the rigts ensured by the Constitution. It is meant to support what America stands for.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I write this in fear. In fear for my country and that which it stands for.
I have recently become aware of a bill called the Military Commissions Act. This act seeks t leave the executive branch un-checked. It seeks to remove altogether the right of habeas corpus of "enemy combatants", which of course is incredibly vague. It also gives the government full ability to do as it wishes to anyone "who is or was detained by the United States and has been determined by the United States to have been properly detained as an enemy combatant
or is awaiting such determination." This act will give the government the ability to do this unchecked. "No court, justice, or judge shall have jurisdiction to hear or consider any other action against the United States or its agents relating to any aspect of the detention, transfer, treatment, trial, or conditions of confinement."
This means torture is allowed.
This scares me. Yes, terrorism is real, and it is a threat. But that doesn't mean we should do this. How far are we willing to go for security? Are we willing to lose our freedom?
This bill has already passed the House and Senate and is only waiting for George W. Bush's signature into law. God help us that we are not too late.
