Canada’s Ultra-Rich Are Getting Richer — While Millions Struggle

Tell Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne: Tax the richest and fund the programs Canadians desperately need.

Inequality in Canada is accelerating at an alarming rate. In 2025:

  • The 40 richest Canadian billionaires grew their wealth by almost $95 billion.
  • The top 1% held nearly a quarter of all Canadian wealth, while the bottom 40% held just over 3%.
  • 4 million Canadians were food insecure.
  • 1.4 million children lived in poverty.
  • Rent and grocery prices keep rising — everyday life is harder for millions.

Canada's tax system isn't helping. There's no tax on extreme wealth, and offshore tax havens allow the richest Canadians and corporations to avoid paying their fair share.

We can fix this. A wealth tax on the ultra-rich and an excess profits tax on major corporations could raise $40 billion a year — enough to fund:

  • Universal child care
  • Mental health services
  • Income supports
  • Affordable housing
  • Climate action

This is about fairness and opportunity for everyone, especially women, Indigenous, Black, and racialized communities who are hardest hit by inequality.

Subject: Canadians demand the ultra-rich pay their fair share

Dear Minister Champagne,

I'm writing because inequality in Canada is accelerating at an alarming rate. In 2025, the 40 richest billionaires grew their wealth by almost $95 billion, while millions of Canadians struggle to afford food, rent, and basic necessities.

The top 1% hold nearly a quarter of Canada's wealth, while the bottom 40% hold just over 3%. Meanwhile, 4 million Canadians are food insecure and 1.4 million children live in poverty.

Canada's tax system isn't doing enough. Extreme wealth isn't taxed, and offshore tax havens cost the government $15 billion a year.

A wealth tax on billionaires combined with a windfall tax on major corporations could raise $40 billion annually. That money could fund child care, mental health supports, income assistance, affordable housing, and climate action, helping the people who need it most.

Canadians deserve a fair tax system. I urge you to act now.

Sincerely,
