The Government Must Not Become Untouchable

In a democratic society people must be able to hold public authorities accountable for their actions. But the Government is attempting to put itself — and all future governments — beyond the reach of the law, silencing people in the process.

Those in power have plans to cut off important avenues of accountability — in Parliament, through the courts, on the streets and in society.

The Government is sidelining our elected MPs when making laws, is attempting to discredit organisations who stand up to it, is trying to limit people's ability to challenge injustice in court, and is looking into weakening the Human Rights Act.

And the new Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill — known as the Police Crackdown Bill — will criminalise people who take to the streets to have their voices heard and give police more powers to shut down protests.

This is a democratic crisis.

It's time for all of us to stand up to power and send a message that the Government must not become untouchable.
