Reform Canada's Inhumane Female Prisons

Canada's female prison system violates the human rights of female convicts, but reform is nowhere in sight. Instances of abuse, neglect, and over-the-top punishments have even caused some female prisoners to commit suicide to escape the brutal conditions.

Prisoner Ashley Smith hung herself with a cloth while guards stood there and watched her turn purple and lifeless. The guards waited for the appropriate time to intervene, but were too late, as Smith was already dead when they approached her cell.

While Smith was alive, footage shows prison guards unnecessarily duct taping her to her airplane chair, and forcibly tranquilizing her against her will while she lay strapped to a gurney. Acts like these may have contributed to Smith's suicide.

Another prisoner was forced to give birth in her prison cell, the baby coming out feet first by the time paramedics arrived. She wasn't allowed to see her baby for three weeks.

This unacceptable abuse must be stopped immediately. Tell Commissioner Don Head to push for immediate women's prison reform!
Dear Commissioner Don Head,

The treatment female prisoners endure in Canada has gone from inappropriate to inhumane, but prison reform is nowhere in sight! These women are brutally handled, oftentimes not even belonging in prison, but only placed there because of Canada's shortage of mental health facilities.

Canada needs to stop substituting mental health resources with prisons, isolating and neglecting the prisoners that need the most medical attention. When prisoners turn into victims themselves, it's time to reform the system at large.

This year, a woman committed suicide in front of prison guards who watched while she hung herself. Another woman gave birth in cell, alone. Instances like this are not few and far between failures of the system. They are representative of a large and systematic failure to serve individuals their human rights, and attend to their basic medical and psychiatric needs.

Reform Canada's female prisons so we no longer have to hear about basic rights violations!
